INTERNATIONAL 420 CLASS ASSOCIATION OF WA RANKING
Updated 31/3/11

YWA have asked the association to develop a method of determining who the association will nominate for future Westsail and State Sailing Team events.

The association has held several discussions and have determined that the key to any successful and fair system is transparency, where the system is based upon regatta results and everyone knows how the system works.

It is therefore the intent of the WA 420 Class Association to establish a ranking ladder based upon regatta results to allow 420 teams to see where they rank amongst their WA peers. The ranking ladder will comprise of one ladder with Open teams and Female teams ranked in line with their position on that ladder.

The ranking ladder will be available on the WA association website and will be updated at the completion of each of the ranking regattas. The ranking ladder, once a minimum of five ranking regattas have been completed, will determine whom the association nominates for events such as Westsail and the State Sailing Team.

Following are the rules for the ranking ladder. These rules are quite simple and easy to understand, with the most difficult part being a way of not hamstringing someone because their skipper or crew is sick or unable to attend a regatta for some reason. For that reason you will see points are allotted individually on the sailors points sheet but accrued as a team for each boat to achieve the final ranking.

Fundamental Rules for the Ranking Ladder

1. Only fully financial members of the International 420 Class Association of WA and Yachting Australia shall be eligible for ranking points.

2. Points shall be awarded according to results in the ranking regattas as listed below:

  • FSC - Indian Ocean Classic
  • RPYC - Dinghy Mini Series
  • RFBYC - International Classes Regatta
  • MOFSC – Easter Regatta
  • International 420 Australian National Championship
  • International 420 WA State Championship
  • SoPYC Solo Series Heat 5

3. Points will be awarded to both the helm and the crew of each boat.

4. The team's total points for the regatta will be the combined total of the helm and crew's points.

5. Points will be awarded to a helm and crew based on one point for every valid West Australian entrant beaten in each ranking regatta .

6. In addition, five points shall be awarded to each helm and crew entered in each qualifying event, with a further five points awarded to each helm and crew competing in the International 420 Australian National Championship.

7. Each helm and crew combination included on the ranking ladder as a team shall be established as a team when they have sailed together for at least two of the previous three ranking events.

8. An individual can be included in one ranked team only. Should a helm or crew become established as a member of a new team, any previously established team inclusive of that individual shall be removed from the ranking ladder.

9. Any points gained by an individual while racing together with any other helm or crew shall be allocated to that individual and shall count towards the total points for the established team of that individual.

10. A change to established teams shall not be cause for any individual to lose points that they have previously accrued.

11. Points will be accumulated for the previous five events with the highest ranked team being the team with the greatest number of points.

12. Teams on equal points will be split by the higher ranking being given to the team that finished better in the last qualifying event held, irrespective of participation. Both the helm and the crew of an established team must compete in the regatta in their established team configuration in order to use their finishing position in a regatta for tie breaking purposes.
